I’m going to be eating dinner on an overnight flight from IAH to AMS... I’m a little nervous about what it’s going to be. Hopefully United has decent wine that I can buy to cover it up.

I let the steak come to room temperature after seasoning it with pepper, then cooked it on a very hot iron griddle for just over three minutes each side. Rested for a few minutes and then sliced.

Great piece of meat.

Ye’, food on a plane never tastes right.

Down to the altitude and quality of the air.

Better getting something before you take off.

Having a snack in the air.

Looks tasty. I’m having leftover pizza for lunch. I feel like having something lighter for dinner, perhaps some Pho. Would be nice to watch some of the 6 Hours of COTA at the same time, too.

I’ve still got cravings for Chinese food though.

I’ll probably have something before I go. It is a 10 hour flight so I know I’ll be hungry on it at some point. I have a few sacks of Combos in my carry-on bag. I don’t think y’all have those in the UK. Total junk food - sort of an artificial cheese filled cracker tube. Typical American garbage, but good for a travel snack. I recall the food on Iberia being pretty good last time I flew from the US to Spain.

Leftover pizza is always good (damn now I’ve a craving for Papa Johns). What’s ‘Pho’?

I can never get into watching racing. I watch a few minutes here and there to see what’s happening but that’s it.

We’ve the Sour Patch sweets but cheddar cheese pretzels may be harder to find but are available.

I don’t think pretzels sell very well in the U.K.

Pho is Vietnamese: at it’s core is rice noodles in beef broth. You can have different cuts of beef in there, but I typically get the one with med-rare sirloin. I know you can get some with well done beef (unlike well done steak, this can still be very tender and tasty), beef tripe, brisket, beef balls (not testicles, but I think are more like meatballs), etc. Then, it’s topped off with fresh, raw bean sprout, basil, lime, hot pepper (the small, extremely hot Thai variety) and coriander/cilantro - the good places should give you this vietnamese coriander which comes in very long leaves, and I’ve never seen in a grocery store before.

I’m not sure what exactly goes into making/seasoning the broth but it can be incredibly tasty, and decent Pho places are abundant in Ottawa.

Its entirely Fox Sports causing the issues. A few years back we used to have SPEED channel which was entirely motorsports coverage. That was turned into Fox Sports 1 and the coverage has been horrible ever since. NBCSN is actually rather good at covering motorsports events (this is the channel where we get F1, Indycar, and some NASCAR).

The mac and cheese is just the Kraft stuff, no tasty homemade stuff for me.

Surströmmimg is fermented herring and it’s an acquired taste. Tried it once, no plans to go there again. I met a lady today though who loves it but that’s because she was given it at about three and had no choice!

I just ate a roast beef, pastrami, salami, and pepperoni on bakery sourdough toast with lettuce and sargento sharp cheddar slice with Texas Pete for lube. I call it the Cold Steve. open face it in the oven at 400F with cheese on both sides for 10 minutes and its a Hot Steve.

It equates to about as much meat as a sandwich with 2 slices of thick cut deli meat such as bologna or a heavily processed turkey or ham. the key is to use extremely thin cuts so as not to add bulk to the sandwich. The intention is depth of flavor.

Kinja'd!!! Svend > Forge Crown Victor!

Oh. I’m guilty of throwing lots of filling into a sandwich. Even if it’s wafer thin, I’ll make it three or four slices thick of each.

But I’m a fat git. Lol.

Lol. I’m a Brit in the north of England where donner kebabs or chips (fries), cheese and gravy are a staple for a night out on the town. Just a little north of the border in Scotland they do battered pizza, deep fried pizza, battered Mars bars, etc...

My breakfast earlier was a couple of double cheese burgers. But they were good.

I usually add fine cut shallots which give it a little more crunch but couldn’t be bothered this time.

I’m just about to order a Chinese takeaway but will be asking them to leave out the seaweed.

The first time I tried it, which was when I was in middle school or early in high school, it didn’t really blow me away but I went back again after a while and have loved it ever since.

As far as tastes go, I wouldn’t necessarily call it an acquired taste, just because it doesn’t have any really strong tastes that are unusual to Western palates. It’s a lot of subtle flavors that may not be very familiar to such a palate, but in my experience it’s very likely to be enjoyed. To clarify: I don’t think it’s an acquired taste in that it’s essentially impossible to completely disgust people with Pho, like stinky tofu or those duck fetus eggs. I’ve seen indifference to Pho, but never disgust.

If you’ve never tried it before and you like beef (and I know you like beef because of your steak) it’s well worth a shot if you can find a decent place, wherever you are.

In the north of England where I am it’s hard to find good Asian food. Most have assimilated to the U.K. taste buds.

It’s like many Italian restaurants are what I call ‘bastardised Italian restaurants’, as they’ve altered the meal to appeal to more British people, there are still great ones but it’s a long slog to find the right ones for you.

Lol. Old man. Ye’, 36 certainly feels old most days.

People eat with their eyes as well as taste and smell. So it’s good to make the effort.

Cooking is a great way to relax but ye’, cleaning up can be a chore but if you do it like I do, the griddle will only need a hot cloth wipe down and leave up to only two pans to wash and a few utensils.
